Muistola is in a test phase, and using it is currently free. Payment is not possible yet. Sections 10–12 on the paid year of Muistola take effect only when payment opens and you buy a year. As a consumer, you always have your statutory rights, and these terms do not limit them. This English version is a translation; if the versions differ, the Finnish version applies.
1. Service provider
The Muistola service is provided by:
Olli PaananenBusiness ID 3315814-6
Evakkotie 30 A
37550 Lempäälä, Finland
Email [email protected]
In these terms, “Muistola” and “we” mean the service provider, and “you” means the user of the service.
2. What Muistola is
Muistola is a service for keeping the memories of grandparents and other storytellers for their family. The storyteller gets question suggestions every week and answers by speaking into the app. Speech is turned into text with the help of AI, and both the recording and the text of each memory are kept. The family listens to and reads the memories, replies with a heart, a written comment or a voice message, and can send the storyteller their own questions.
Muistola works on iPhone, Android phones and in a web browser. What the service includes may change as we develop it (section 9).
3. Who these terms apply to
These terms apply to everyone who uses Muistola: family members with an account, and storytellers who join a family with a joining code. Family members accept the terms when they create an account. Storytellers accept them when they join the family with a code, and the joining screen links to these terms and the privacy policy. The family tells them beforehand what Muistola is about. Before they give permission to save their memories, the app also shows them how Muistola works (section 5).
We explain how we handle personal data in our privacy policy.
4. Accounts and the family
- The family’s founder, meaning the person who creates the family’s account, must be at least 18 years old. Other family members can create an account from the age of 13, and anyone under 18 needs a guardian’s permission.
- When you create an account, use your real name and your own email address. Your account is personal, so do not share your password with others.
- An account belongs to one family at a time. A family can have up to 50 family members.
- All family members can invite new members with the invite link, and all family members can see all of the family’s memories, including earlier ones. Share the invite link only with people you want in the family.
- The family’s founder can remove family members from the family. If the founder deletes their account, the role passes to the family member who has been in the family the longest.
- Let us know straight away if you suspect someone else is using your account.
5. Adding a storyteller
In Muistola, the storyteller talks about their own life, and the family hears it. That is why it matters that the storyteller knows what Muistola is about and wants to take part.
- The family is responsible for making sure that, before joining, the storyteller knows what Muistola is and wants to use it. At the very least, tell them that memories are saved as recordings and as text, that the text is written by AI, and that the family listens to and reads the memories.
- The last page of the app’s introduction tells the storyteller the same things: memories are saved as recordings and as text for the family to listen to and read, and AI turns speech into text. The storyteller gives permission to save their memories by pressing OK, let’s begin. We store the time of this permission (privacy policy, section 5).
- Do not add anyone to Muistola secretly or against their will, and do not record another person’s speech without their knowledge.
- If the storyteller cannot decide for themselves, for example because of dementia, act in their best interests and, where needed, together with their legal representative.
- Storytellers can stop at any time: they can simply not answer, sign out, delete their own memories, or withdraw their permission and ask for their information to be deleted.
- Up to four storytellers can be added to the same family. If you need more, contact us at [email protected].
- Muistola is always free for storytellers.
6. Memories and other content
The content belongs to you
Storytellers own their memories, both the recordings and the text. Family members own their own questions, comments and voice messages. Muistola does not get ownership of any content.
What we may do with the content
So that we can provide the service, you give Muistola a free, non-exclusive right to store, copy, transfer and process your content and to show it to your family. This includes, for example, turning speech into text with AI, making backups and processing by our service providers, which are described in the privacy policy. This right ends when the content is deleted, except for backups, which are deleted within 90 days.
We do not sell content, use it for advertising or give it for training AI models. If we ever wanted to use a memory, for example as an example in marketing, we would ask for permission separately.
The family’s shared archive
Memories are shared within the family: they are visible to all family members and the family’s storytellers. A storyteller’s memories stay with the family even if their phone signs out, and when a family member leaves, the memories stay with the others. Storytellers can delete their own memories. Family members cannot change or delete a storyteller’s memories.
Responsibility for your own content
Everyone is responsible for what they tell or write in Muistola. Memories often mention other people. Memories stay within the family, but if you copy or share a memory outside the family, you are responsible for that and should respect the privacy of the people mentioned in it.
Photos
A family member can add photos of the storyteller and the family, which the family and the storyteller see. Only add photos you have the right to use, for example your own photos or photos whose photographer has given permission. Also ask the people in the photo for permission, and for a photo of a child, ask their guardian. The rights to a photo stay with whoever holds them. You can change or remove a photo at any time, and if someone in a photo asks for it to be removed, remove it or contact us. We explain how photos are handled in the privacy policy.
7. Acceptable use
Muistola is meant for personal and family use. You must not:
- record another person’s speech without their knowledge or add anyone as a storyteller against their will
- add illegal content or content that infringes someone’s honour, privacy or copyright, or add a photo of another person against their wishes
- use the service to harass others
- use someone else’s account, guess joining codes or invite links, get around the service’s protections or overload the service with automated programs
- use the service commercially without our permission.
To keep costs reasonable and prevent misuse, the service has usage limits. A storyteller can save up to 10 memories a day, and a memory can be up to 20 minutes long. A family member can send up to 20 questions and 20 voice messages a day. A memory over the limit is saved once the day has passed.
If you seriously or repeatedly break these terms, we may remove content or close the account. We will tell you first and give you a chance to put things right, unless that is impossible or the breach is so serious that the account has to be closed immediately.
8. AI and mistakes in the text
In Muistola, AI turns speech into text, makes the text readable, suggests a title and follow-up questions, and estimates which year a memory is from. AI makes mistakes: it can mishear names, places, dialect words and years, and the date is always an estimate. Passages that cannot be made out are marked as unclear.
- The original recording is always kept, so you can check what was said.
- Storytellers can correct the text of their memories.
- Turning speech into text can sometimes fail, for example if the recording is very quiet or damaged. The recording is kept even then.
Text written by AI is not an official document. Do not rely on it, for example in inheritance matters or health decisions, without checking the original recording. The privacy policy explains our use of AI in more detail.
9. Test phase and availability
Muistola is in a test phase and is currently free. During the test phase the service may change: we add, change and remove features, and there may be bugs and outages.
- We aim to keep the service available and the memories safe, and we make regular backups. However, we cannot promise uninterrupted service.
- We will tell you about longer maintenance breaks in advance whenever possible.
- Muistola also depends on other services, such as your internet connection and our service providers.
If we close Muistola down, we will tell you at least three months in advance and give you a chance to get a copy of the memories.
Current prices are on our website muistola.com. Before payment opens, we will tell test-phase families what happens to their memories, and we will give them enough time to decide. Payment applies to you only if you choose to buy a year of Muistola.
10. Trial and a year of Muistola
Payment is not possible yet. When it opens, Muistola works as follows. The points about buying apply to you only when you buy a year of Muistola.
- Trial. A new family can try Muistola for free before deciding whether to carry on. No payment card is needed for the trial, and it does not turn into a paid plan by itself. The length of the trial is shown on our website muistola.com.
- A year of Muistola. The paid plan is a year of Muistola for the whole family. It is paid once and does not renew automatically. The start date of the year is shown when you buy, and we will remind you before the year ends in case you want to continue.
- Private use. A year of Muistola is meant for private use among the storyteller’s family, relatives and close ones. Care homes, associations, municipalities and other organisations need a separate agreement: contact us at [email protected].
- Buying. A year of Muistola is bought online at muistola.com. There are no purchases in the app. Payments are handled by a separate payment service, described in the privacy policy.
- Prices. Current prices and what they include are on our website muistola.com, and they are also shown before you buy. Your purchase is governed by these terms and the prices valid at the time of purchase. Prices are consumer prices and include VAT. Price changes do not affect a year you have already paid for.
- If the service does not match what was agreed, you have your rights under the Finnish Consumer Protection Act, such as the right to have the fault fixed, to a price reduction or to cancel the contract. Please tell us about the fault within a reasonable time.
- Muistola is always free for storytellers.
11. Right of withdrawal and gifts
Right of withdrawal
When you buy a year of Muistola online, you have the right as a consumer to withdraw from the purchase within 14 days of the purchase date without giving a reason. You can withdraw using the withdrawal function on the purchase page, by email to [email protected] or with any other clear statement. We will refund the payment using the same payment method within 14 days of receiving your notice.
The free trial is not a purchase, and it does not shorten the withdrawal period: the 14 days run from the day you buy the year, even if you already used Muistola during the trial.
If you asked for the year to start immediately during the withdrawal period and then withdraw, we may deduct a reasonable amount for the time the paid year was available to you before you withdrew. Trial time is not counted.
A year of Muistola as a gift
A year of Muistola can be bought as a gift. In that case the purchase contract is made with the buyer, and the right of withdrawal and other rights related to the purchase belong to the buyer. The recipient and their family use the service under these terms, and their memories belong to them, not to the buyer. The buyer cannot see the family’s memories unless they are a family member themselves.
A year bought as a gift starts only when the gift is activated. How long the gift is valid is shown at the time of purchase. The withdrawal period runs from the purchase date. If the buyer withdraws from a gift that has already been activated, we will tell the recipient what happens to the family’s memories and give them a chance to get a copy.
12. When the year ends
A year of Muistola ends when the year runs out and is not continued, or when the contract ends for another reason. Memories do not disappear when the year ends.
- When the year ends, the memories stay available to the family, and you can still listen to them and read them. New questions no longer arrive.
- We will always tell you before we delete memories, and you can get a copy of them.
- We do not promise to keep memories forever. We recommend asking for a copy of important memories.
Getting a copy of the memories
For now, you can get a copy of the memories by asking at [email protected]. We provide the recordings and texts as files. We are planning to add downloading to the app as well.
13. Referrals
You can tell a friend about Muistola with your own referral link. You will find the link in the app under Family tab, Tell a friend, and every family member has their own link.
- Reward. When a family that started Muistola with your link starts a paid Muistola year, your family gets three extra months on its own Muistola year. You get the reward for every such family.
- When the reward is earned. Only when the referred family starts a paid Muistola year. Creating an account or a free trial does not yet earn a reward.
- During the test phase. Payments are not yet possible. We already record which family started with whose link. Earned months are credited when payments open and the referred family starts a paid year. The months are added to your family’s current or next Muistola year.
- Who the reward belongs to. The reward belongs to the referrer’s family, and the family keeps it even if the referrer deletes their own account.
- The reward is not money. The months cannot be exchanged for money, transferred to another family or sold, and unused months are not refunded.
- A new family. The reward is earned only from a new family that creates a Muistola account with your link. Your own link does not earn a reward for your own family.
- Misuse. If the link is used against these terms, for example by creating your own or made-up accounts and families to get the reward, we may withhold or cancel the reward.
- What you see. The app shows how many families have started with your link. We do not share the names or other details of the referred families (privacy policy, section 3.8).
- Changes and ending. We may change the referral terms or end referrals. We will tell you in the app or by email at least 30 days in advance. Months already earned are kept.
14. Stopping use and deleting your account
When you stop
You can stop using Muistola at any time. Family members delete their account in the app: Family tab, Settings, Delete account. If you are the last family member in the family, this deletes the whole family and all of its memories, so ask for a copy of the memories first. Storytellers can sign out of the app and ask for their information to be deleted at [email protected].
Deleting your account does not refund a year of Muistola you have already paid for, unless you are using your right of withdrawal, the service is faulty or the law otherwise requires a refund.
When we stop
We may terminate the agreement by telling you at least three months in advance. If you materially break these terms, we may end the agreement immediately (section 7). If we end a paid subscription for a reason that is not caused by you, we will refund the payment for the unused period.
15. Liability
We do our best to keep Muistola working and the memories safe. We are liable for our actions as provided by law.
- We are not liable for indirect losses, such as lost income, or for losses caused by force majeure, by your own actions or by disruptions beyond our control, such as internet outages.
- During the test phase the service is free and may contain bugs. We recommend asking for a copy of important memories.
- We are not responsible for content that users add to the service.
These limitations do not apply to damage caused intentionally or through gross negligence, and they do not limit your rights under the Consumer Protection Act or other mandatory law.
16. App stores
If you download the app from the App Store or Google Play, the store’s own terms also apply to the download. This agreement is between you and Muistola. Apple and Google are not parties to it, and they are not responsible for Muistola, its content, how it works or its support. Muistola is responsible for the app and its support. When you download the app from the App Store, Apple and its subsidiaries may rely on these terms in matters concerning the use of the app.
17. Changes to these terms
We may change these terms, for example when payment opens, when we add features or when the law changes. We will tell you about significant changes in the app or by email at least 30 days before they take effect. If you do not accept a change, you can stop using the service and delete your account before it takes effect. If you have a paid subscription and the change is significantly to your disadvantage, you can end the subscription, and we will refund the payment for the unused period.
We announce minor changes, such as clarifications, by updating the terms on this page.
18. Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by Finnish law. If you live in another EU country, you also keep the protection of the mandatory consumer protection law of your country.
If you are unhappy with something, please contact us first at [email protected] so we can find a solution together. If we cannot agree, you can ask for advice from the consumer advisory service of the Finnish Competition and Consumer Authority (kkv.fi) and take the matter to the Consumer Disputes Board (kuluttajariita.fi). The Board’s decisions are recommendations. If you live in another EU country, you can ask the European Consumer Centre for help.
You can also bring a claim in the district court of your own home municipality.
These terms are effective from 19 October 2026. Updated 20 October 2026: the trial, a year of Muistola and the right of withdrawal after the trial. See also the privacy policy.
